Managing Anger

Ever get so angry that it feels like the top of your head is about to explode?  There are ways to keep you from getting yourself all worked up and completely losing your cool.

One effective way to manage anger is to be mindful of what you're feeling at the moment of anger, and prevent the knee-jerk reaction of physically or verbally lashing out.  In short, step back and take a time-out.

Sometimes this means holding your tongue, pausing and breathing slowly to lower the heart rate.  You could also say to the other person, “I am really angry right now, but I need to take a moment to pull myself together before we talk about this,” and walk away for as long as it takes to do so.

This time-out technique helps the angry person feels more in control of his/her emotions,  better able to make a plan to calmly discuss the source of the anger, and prevents an attack on the other person.  It's also a sign of emotional maturity.

This is a behavior that anyone can learn at any age.  Hey, if this guy can do it, so can you.
